Blythwood is located in a North Toronto residential area. The school was built over 85 years ago. In 1992, a multi-purpose room was added that serves as a recreational and meeting facility in the community. The school serves over 400 students from JK to Grade 6. Most of the children are from English speaking homes with a low rate of mobility. The school has a small Early Language Learner population. The school grounds border a ravine and are used extensively by the community all year round for sporting and other group activities. Staff work collaboratively to provide a positive and enriching learning environment for students. Parent volunteers work in partnership with staff to provide a rich variety of activities for our students.
High Expectations
Blythwood staff have high expectations for all students in Literacy and Numeracy, and all other areas of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to achieve high standards. The students are supported through a comprehensive Literacy programme focusing on shared, independent and guided reading and writing. Numeracy is taught using various teaching strategies. Technology is used to enhance all subject areas. Students have many opportunities to show excellence in the Arts and Sciences. Core French is an integral part of the Junior Division programme.
EQAO
Students at Blythwood continue to maintain excellent EQAO scores for both Grade 3 and Grade 6. The staff is committed to maintaining these excellent results. Extra support is given to students who are not meeting Provincial Standards through resource programmes and extra help sessions. Staff access Literacy and Numeracy Instructional leaders, Learning Coaches and ESL teachers to support their programmes and to further enrich their classrooms. Students are well prepared for the EQAO assessment and accommodations are provided where necessary.

Athletics
Students are given many opportunities to participate in school athletics. Blythwood has a very large cross country team and all students are encouraged to participate. Blythwood also has school teams in slo pitch, volleyball, basketball,soccer, touch football, ice hockey and track and field. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence and maintain their academics.
Safe Schools
Character Education is embedded into the school curriculum. The school focuses on TDSB attributes monthly, through assemblies, and school announcements. The Code of Conduct stresses common sense, courtesy, and cooperation. The school publicizes and validates these values and strives to exemplify them daily. Issues of safety are examined on a regular basis.
Staff Professional Development
Staff are involved in Professional Development in Literacy, Numeracy and Technology. Staff use the Learning Coaches on a regular basis to further their teaching. Collaborative Inquiry and Professional learning are supported by grade and divisional teams. Staff meet on a regular basis to discuss best teaching practises and to work together on moderated marking.
Community Outreach and Partnerships
Blythwood is actively involved in Community Outreach projects. Students take part in toy, clothing and food drives. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in outreach initiatives which are developed and organized by the students and staff. Students also have a partnership with Sunny View school. (a school for students with exceptionalities).

Student Life - Where You Belong
Students at Blythwood have high expectations academically and score very well on the EQAO test. Students at Blythwood are physically active. They participate in a wide range of athletic activities including cross country running ,volleyball, basketball,soccer, touch football, slo-pitch, ice hockey and track and field. We have many school teams which are very competitive. Our cross country team includes well over 100 students. The students of Blythwood help with Community initiatives like the toy, food and clothing drives. Our students also participate in the Annual Terry Fox run, raising money to fund cancer research. Character Education is embedded into the curriculum and our students and staff strive to show behaviour which is exemplary. Special artists, dance productions and musical performances are brought to the school on a regular basis and are shared with our students through school wide assemblies.
What Sets Us Apart
Blythwood students score very well on the EQAO scores in both Numeracy and Literacy. Students are becoming very familiar with technology and have many opportunities to use technology in the classrooms through net books, and mac book lap top computers. Scientist in the School is used often to reinforce science concepts. Blythwood students are offered many opportunities to become involved in school sports teams. Blythwood works closely with the War Veterans and have on occasion been asked to take part in a Community Remembrance Day assembly. Students at Blythwood have many opportunities to see artists perform in the the school . Many of our Junior students are given opportunities for overnight experiences. Students participate in Theme Play Days such as Carnival, Play Day and School Track and Field Day. Blythwood has many lunch time and after school activities for students, from Chess to Dance . Character Education is embedded into the curriculum and students work hard to exemplify these attributes.
Parent and Community Engagement
Blythwood has a very involved School Council with well over 50 active members. Parent volunteers help with the safe arrival program, After- 4 programmes, sports teams, and in the classrooms.The community actively participates with the clothing, food and toy drives. The Bike Rodeo, Fall Fun Fair and Lip Sync are three parent run events which are very popular. Fundraising for the school and charities are very important aspects of the Blythwood community. Collaboration with community/social agencies is very important to our students, staff and parents, for example the Blythwood community has developed a strong partnership with Sunny View School . Many of our parents are involved with the Lawrence Park Ratepayers' Association. Our school choir often performs in the community.
