Calderstone Middle School is a vibrant school comprised of students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Calderstone’s focus on student success is rooted in the belief that student success is achievable through a consistent, collaborative effort between all school stakeholders. The school’s mission centres on the theme: “The Future Is In Our Hands." The children in our classes represent a future that needs continuous growth, nourishment and support which must come from the whole school community.
The school is alive with innovation. Calderstone has moved ahead with a renewed focus on technology with two state-of-the-art mobile computer labs, one comprised of netbooks and the other of iPads. Calderstone’s vision is to move ahead into the full integration of technology in all areas of teaching and learning.
Calderstone prides itself on its innovative methods to connect with students and their families. The school hosts approximately 100 fathers and sons every Wednesday night in the school’s library. The program boasts a rich variety of reading materials tailored to meet the specific needs of the boys. In addition to helping the boys develop a love of reading, this program also supports the development of positive and healthy relationships between fathers and sons.
A second component of the school’s community outreach programming is a dynamic mother and daughter program which provides assistance to mothers and daughters to engage in discussion about pertinent adolescent issues. Some of the issues discussed at the weekly mother and daughter meetings include body image, healthy eating habits, relationships and academic success. This unique program has proved incredibly successful in helping to develop a greater sense of self-esteem in the young ladies at Calderstone.
Finally, in addition to all of the exceptional academic programs that take place at Calderstone each and every day, the school also prides itself on an amazing Peer Mediation Program. This program fosters and develops conflict resolution skills in students, allowing them to successfully mediate conflicts within their peer group. This program has proved incredibly successful in building the self-confidence of our students and providing them with an essential life skill.
All of these exceptional programs, combined with teachers committed to a philosophy of shaping student success through culturally relevant teaching practices, make Calderstone a truly amazing place to learn and succeed.
