The Mission of our School
The Mission of the York Region District School Board is “We unite in our purpose to inspire and prepare learners for life in our changing world community.” In order to support the Board’s mission, the mission of Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School is “The mission of Sir Wilfrid Laurier P.S. is for parents, staff, and administration to work collaboratively to promote a positive learning environment in both official languages, to enhance the quality of education as well as to foster in each student the values, skills, and knowledge needed to make a meaningful contribution to their community and society.”
Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School opened on September 04, 2007 with 342 students and 25 staff members. As of September 28, 2017, the school population is 751 students and 56 staff members.
Single track French Immersion programming from Grades Two to Eight are offered at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School. Over 80% of the student population is bused.
The school population initially drew mostly from the dual track French Immersion Program offered previously at Buttonville Public School which was relocated en masse to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School, a single track French Immersion site. In addition, significant residential development has occurred in the area since that time which, together with a high demand for French Immersion programming, has resulted in significant growth over time. As a result, effective September 2013, all Grade One classes attend French Immersion at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Public School starting in the Grade Two year. An eight room addition was completed in November 2014 on the second level.
The official school opening was held on Thursday, April 10, 2008. The school colours determined by the students are blue and silver. The school mascot determined by students is the lynx: “Allez les Lynx!”. The school motto is “On apprend et on s’épanouit ensemble.” The school song was introduced in Fall of 2011. The school Principals have been Laurie Finn (2008-15), Ghada Sadaka (2016-2017), Deborah Joyce (2017-current). The Vice Principals have been Susan Palmer (2009-2010), Rosanna Totino (2010-13), Craig Barton (2013-2015), Kathryn Gravill (2015-2018) and Penny Lam (2018 - current).
The school is named after Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919), the first Canadian born and francophone prime minister, who served as Canadian Prime Minister during consecutive terms served from 1896 to 1911.
