Our School
History
Black Public School is named after the Black Walnut tree, an important historical feature of this area. Please select our Trail of the Black Walnut video. The community focuses on developing a close and neighbourly community life. Our school has quickly become one of the major hubs for community life and ongoing life-long learning.
Our school mascot is the ‘Wolverine'.
Facilities
Black Walnut P.S. began classes in September 2012.
A before and after school childcare program, owned and operated by Kid's Connection Child Care is located at Black Walnut P.S. and provides daycare before (7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.) and after school (3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.). The centre staff work closely with teachers and parents and administration to support students attending the school.

As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Black Walnut Public School supports student learning through the curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and many other co-curricular activities. Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education
Every student has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. The York Region District School Board has a Safe Schools Policy and a defined procedure to implement the policy. Both the policy and procedure support the view that student discipline involves a continuum of support including prevention, intervention and appropriate consequences.
Black Walnut Public School supports the development of Character Education in the York Region District School Board. While parents, staff and students model positive character attributes in our daily interactions, we also focus on the monthly attributes during the morning announcements and in assemblies. Individual teachers highlight the attributes in their classrooms. Students receive "Gotcha" awards for demonstrating the Character Education qualities.
We live in a multicultural, multiracial, multifaith society. Black Walnut's School Council is reflective of the community, where the majority of our families speak English as their first language. Black Walnut Public School believes in the intrinsic worth of all students so that each feels respected, valued and validated. We celebrate diversity and model equity and inclusiveness in all our programs and practices. We assist our students to define, detect and reject all forms of discrimination which limit their potential and that of others.
