German Mills, in southwest Markham, was named for the early German settlers in the area, and has a rich history. German Mills became the first significant industrial complex in Markham township. In the 1790s, it boasted a warehouse for the Northwest Fur Trade Company, a grist mill, saw mill, blacksmith shop, and homes. Today German Mills is primarily a residential neighbourhood, with the bulk of the homes being single-family residences built in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as some apartment buildings and townhomes.
