Our vision is working with our community and in partnership with parents. It is our vision to prepare students and families to be lifelong learners and develop the foundational knowledge, skills and values to move forward in their academic life to become responsible global citizens.
Brian W. Fleming Public School is a welcoming learning community to a diverse community. Formerly called Havenwood School and renamed in 2009, this school has had a long history of outreach and involvement in the community. Building foundational skills for the best possible start in learning is made possible through the Best Start programming, which encompasses the HUB, Ontario Early Years, the Peel Day Care and full-day kindergarten. Resources available to parents include social work, speech and language, outreach worker, parenting classes, adult literacy classes and collaboration with health agencies. Our partnership with Dixie Bloor provides us with a settlement worker, as well as after school and summer camps. In addition, through our adult volunteer program, parents receive training to deliver the Falcon reading program, learn office skills by assisting office administrators or by running clubs that benefit their children during the lunch hour. This provides opportunities for parents, particularly mothers, to receive some training for future employment.
Other outreach initiatives include the Understanding Each Other collaboration with Forest Glen, Glenhaven and Glenforest. These initiatives provide all parents in the community with workshops and learning opportunities to better understand the educational expectations of students from preschool to grade 12. Our partnerships with General Mills, Nissan, the Breakfast for Santa Foundation and the City Centre Rotary Club provide students with a daily breakfast program throughout the year, subsidies for learning excursions and support as needed to families.
All families are invited to participate and share in a wide range of learning opportunities that are focused on developing the skills and knowledge needed to learn and work as productive citizens. Brian W. Fleming students, staff and parents together developed the Fleming Falcon norms of behaviour that represent our code of conduct. The qualities that are inherent in this code reflect the character traits of the Peel board and the learning skills that students require to be successful as learners. Fleming Falcon stands for: Friendly, Always respectful, Lifelong learners, Caring community, Ownership of choice and Nations learning together.
Our identified school success goal is to increase and facilitate the development of critical thinking skills in reading and mathematics. Through collaborative inquiry in both grade level and cross grade teams, teachers meet on a regular basis to examine student's work and plan differentiated learning tasks and instruction that benefit all students. At Brian W. Fleming we emphasize the importance of first language learning and support students through differentiated instructional strategies and clubs such as Language Ambassadors. Three times a year, parents are invited to listen to the “languages of the community” through an evening of reading with the principal and language ambassadors, which emphasize the importance of literacy. We are proud of our arts and physical education programming. Students may choose to participate in track and field, marathon running, soccer, benchball, bucket drumming, choir, ukulele club and many leadership opportunities such as Student Council, Ambassador language club, Eco-club (we are an Ontario EcoSchool, gold certified!) and PALS/Peacekeepers.
At Brian W. Fleming we are "learning together as peaceful global citizens" in a safe and nurturing environment.
