Sawmill Valley Public School recognizes that students achieve their best when they feel safe, nurtured, welcomed, respected and included. We are committed to:

• supporting student success by promoting responsibility, respect, academic excellence, civility and good citizenship;

• promoting positive values, attitudes and behaviours, which encourage children to become productive, adaptable global citizens; and

• teaching usable critical thinking skills that challenge children and foster lifelong learning based on the individual needs and abilities of each child

We believe that parents, the school and community must all work together to help students learn to become responsible members of society, being sensitive to the diversity, cultural and special needs of individual students. We must clearly demonstrate respect for social justice, human rights, and promote the values needed to develop responsible members of a democratic society.

We strive to provide a dynamic resource-based environment for learning and to nurture a lifelong interest in learning. We encourage independent learning and activities that are planned cooperatively with support staff such as the teacher-librarian, special education teacher, ESL teacher, music and drama teacher, physical education teacher and the classroom teacher. This cooperative inquiry approach ensures an integrated program filled with rich tasks that raise the level of our critical thinkers.

Much of our character education and spirit building is delivered through our Sawmill Valley Timber Wolf campaign. Students are assigned one of five colour wolf packs and earn saw paws by demonstrating any combination of Timber Wolf traits. During special events and monthly spirit assemblies, students wear their pack colours (TW logo t-shirt) to show their spirit, earn pack points and participate in a saw paw draw for prizes. At the end of the year, each student in the wolf pack with the most points wins a special keepsake prize at the traditional Canada Day assembly.
