Darcel Avenue Sr. Public School's unique mission statement, “Our Legacy; Living, Learning, Succeeding,” is embodied in the life of the school.
"Darcel as a Learning Community Where Students Develop Empathy, Become Lifelong Learners and Reach Their Full Potential" is our vision, and our enthusiastic and dedicated staff works daily to realize this vision. This is demonstrated through our Climate for Learning Mandate, where the focus has been on developing various character traits, including caring, respect, inclusiveness and honesty. We have developed an Anti-Bullying Program which has been fully implemented in our school. Each month, our school focuses on one character trait and students are recognized at monthly assemblies for demonstrating this trait. This is currently being extended to staff as well.
To further encourage our students to be lifelong learners and reach their full potential, our staff has provided the support needed through a variety of means. We have two GLD classes and several teachers who support other students through our ESL/ELD programs and ISSP programs. We also recently acquired a behavioral contact teacher who supports our BTAs in teaching our students social skills. Our school has also been fortunate to be involved in TLCPs in both mathematics and language. We value all students and encourage them to become contributing members of our school community. This is reflected in our GLD students being responsible for providing a luncheon on Wednesdays for all our students. This is a proud accomplishment for our students who have the opportunity to develop life skills.
Darcel incorporates a variety of extracurricular activities to meet the needs of our diverse student population. These include cricket and soccer teams, handball, basketball, football and rock climbing, to name a few. Student interest in the arts is also encouraged through our musicals, dance/drama club, and the Year Book club. Students are also engaged through our math club, Explora Vision and Silver Birch Reading Clubs. We also have a grade 7 and 8 Red Maple Reading program which is done as an enrichment, where students do blogging and use technology to enhance their learning.
One of the greatest things about Darcel is that our staff works as a team. Whenever there is a need for assistance, there are always people who step in to help without being asked. In fact, if you are new to Darcel, you may be hard pressed to determine what the roles of staff are because you will often see people doing different tasks. This makes our school a wonderful place to work and learn.
