Our School

GL Roberts CVI is located by the scenic Pumphouse Marsh, just steps from Oshawa Creek and the Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario. Our location has enabled us to establish a focus school, within our existing strong educational program, called the GL Roberts CVI School of Environmental Studies.

Environmental Studies

Unique to Durham and the province, we offer environmental content in many courses leading to a Certificate of Environmental Studies. Our environmental focus is possible thanks to the support of our partners, including the City of Oshawa, and General Motors of Canada. With the collaboration of GM, we offer two innovative courses, Grade 11 Watershed Management and Industry and the Environment at the Grade 12 level. We also offer a Horticulture Program with a focus on landscaping and leading to college, university or apprenticeship opportunities. Our school-wide environmental activities include Earth Week, Groundwater Festival, a recycling program, Project GREEN watershed quality testing, and participation the Envirothon challenge.

Literacy

Throughout the year, our school is proud to offer many test preparation sessions and programs to ensure success. Many students benefit from one or more of the following:​

• After School Literacy Lessons - These sessions run Tuesday and Thursday after school in the weeks leading up to the test date. Students receive detailed tips and instructions on many aspects of the test, as well as, opportunities to practice their reading and writing skills. 
• Quest Program - Selected students are invited to sit in small group sessions which focus on receiving one-to-one practice and tips towards being successful on the test. 
• Carnival - All students writing the test are invited to a half day session in the library the week before the test is where all aspects of reading and writing are highlighted. Carnival includes many fun, out of your seat activities, snacks and prizes to encourage students to refocus themselves after the March Break. 
• Accommodations Camp - Students who receive accommodations through the Special Education Department are invited in semester one to attend sessions where there is a focus on different types of assistive technology that can best benefit the student on test taking day.  
• Silent Reading - Many classes at G.L Roberts regularly utilize silent reading periods throughout the school year to encourage students to be inquisitive life long learners. 
• School Wide Literacy Focus - Teachers model the format of the literacy test questions in many of their lessons in order to help students get comfortable with the types of questions they may be asked on the test.
