Our School

William Dunbar Public School has a population of 620 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. We house the Gifted Program made up of 8 classes from grades 4 to 8. It is our purpose to work collaboratively to ensure that all students learn at high levels. 

Our school is located in the city of Pickering just east of Toronto. The school was built in 1987 and a new wing, housing eight classrooms, was added in 1997. At the same time, the library was extended to include a computer lab. Most of our students live in the catchment area and walk to school while many ride the bus from all areas of Pickering to attend the Gifted Program.

Our school focus is to orchestrate a balance of student opportunities for active learning using innovative instructional strategies which address all areas of academics, arts and athletics. We provide these opportunities within a school climate that is safe, respectful and enthusiastic. Our purpose is to connect students to authentic learning experiences, groom responsible citizens and foster community leaders. Underlying all efforts is the belief that good character must be the foundation of all success. Character grows strong with nurture, guidance and encouragement. At William Dunbar, we focus on a number of attributes of good character through assemblies, class activities and school-wide programs.

The students, at our school, also benefit from the involvement of many dedicated parent volunteers; they assist in the classroom, on class trips and in the office. William Dunbar has an active School Community Council. Members plan and implement a wide variety of activities that support our school community and offer opportunities for families to participate together. Recent activities have included the Welcome Back BBQ, Oshawa Generals Game and Fun Fair.
