Arbor Glen Public School, opened in 1975, is located near Steeles Avenue East and Don Mills Road. The school building is a metaphor for literacy, with its open classrooms surrounding the library and technology resource centre. The school serves students representing more than 25 countries of birth. Approximately 70% of the students speak English as a second language. Predominant languages represented in the school include Cantonese, Gujarati, Mandarin and Persian. Arbor Glen Community Child Care, housed in the school, provides nursery and before and after school programs. Arbor Glen is committed to providing quality programs in the arts, language, mathematics, physical education, science and technology and social studies.

Literacy
The Literacy program emphasizes a high level of competency in critical and creative thinking, reading, writing, oral communication and media studies. Our teachers use a variety of strategies to motivate their students and direct their learning. They integrate language and literacy into all areas of the curriculum, including the arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The emphasis on strong comprehension and critical thinking encourages our students to communicate confidently and effectively and to apply their knowledge in challenging and complex ways while they make connections to real life challenges and situations.
Numeracy
Students are encouraged to develop a depth of knowledge and strong skills as well as a positive attitude towards mathematics. Teachers integrate problem solving and communication skills throughout all five strands of mathematics by using authentic learning experiences that encourage students to develop appropriate connections between mathematics and the real world.
Science and Technology
The science and technology programs at Arbor Glen include hands-on experiences, a Science Fair, visits from the Scientists in the Schools and Mad Science programs, organized field trips based on curriculum expectations and real world connections.
Safe and Caring Schools
An important goal of the school is to help students develop self-discipline and social skills so they can become productive, mature and responsible members of society. The school stresses respect for self, others and the environment. Our School Ambassador and Playground Pals programs enable our students to contribute to the positive atmosphere of the school.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Students at Arbor Glen have opportunities to participate in many special events. These include accolade assemblies to highlight achievement and character development, a Winter Concert and Spring Science Fair. Students have opportunities to showcase their talents at the United Way Arbor Glen Idol Show and at the school's Open House. Students see a variety of live productions and performances, both in and out of the school. They are encouraged to participate in our primary and junior choirs and dance groups, Bollywood dance group and recorder club. They are active in sports. Our teams, both house and intramural, include baseball, basketball, badminton, soccer, track and field and volleyball. Clubs include the Blue Spruce and Silver Birch Reading, Public Speaking, French, Homework and Math clubs. Leadership opportunities are provided for students who are Playground Pals, Ambassadors and Announcers. Students participate very successfully in the Mathematica Competitions. There are the fund and spirit raisers that include the Valentine Bake Sale, Holiday Bazaar, Jump Rope for Heart and United Way activities which include the Arbor Glen Idol Contest.

Parent and Community Engagement
The success of our students is in large part due to the impressive level of commitment of our community. There is a strong partnership with a variety of community and neighbourhood service programs including the Toronto Police and Public Health Departments and the Ontario Early Years Centres. There are transition activities with other schools and student participation in charity functions. We welcome teacher candidates from several teacher training programs and co-op education and volunteer students from secondary schools. There is a caring and supportive School Council that sponsors many extra programs and activities for our students. Parent and community volunteers assist in classrooms and on field trips on a regular basis. They support activities that include Pizza lunches, Holiday Bazaar, Valentine's Day Bake Sale and Book Bag Program.
