Character Education
Character Education is a York Region District School Board priority and a Fossil Hill P.S. commitment. Our school values a school environment that is built on the ten attributes of Character Matters: Respect, Empathy, Initiative, Responsibility, Fairness, Perseverance, Honesty, Courage, Integrity, and Optimism. It is up to all of us to contribute in positive ways, through our words and actions, to create a place of learning that reflects who we are and what we stand for as a community. It will be important for all of us to be equity minded and accepting of all.
F.O.S.S.I.L. Expectations
At Fossil Hill, students are encouraged to obey the following expectations:
- F - Follow directions the first time they are given.
- O - On time, at school and prepared to learn.
- S - Show respect for others and yourself.
- S - Show respect for property and the environment.
- I - Include others in safe play.
- L - Leave out bullying and name calling.
When the above F.O.S.S.I.L. expectations are not followed, students are asked to reflect on their actions (explaining what happened, how their actions impacted others, how they can solve the problem next time). We use a restorative approach when dealing with issues of discipline and often we enlist the help of our Peer Mediators who are trained student leaders who act as a third party, helping students resolve issues.
Fossil's Snack Program
Fossil Hill offers a snack program to all of our students. Fruits, vegetables, and nutritious snacks are available in the office throughout the day.
