Our School
Blue Willow Public School opened in September 2000; a school for the new millennium. Blue Willow is a school with a highly diverse population. We are pleased to have students whose home cultures represent the cultures of the world. Although many of our students were born in Canada, English is not always the first language spoken in many homes. A little over 40% of our students have a language other than English as the main language in the home. Many more students are exposed to both English and another language at home.
Our current student population is approximately 600 students. Every year we continue to welcome new students to the school as families move into our area and families move to other locations. Aligned with the Board focus, Blue Willow has a very strong emphasis on Literacy across the curriculum. Balanced literacy within protected language blocks is built in to the daily structure. To support our commitment to the best early education program possible, we provide access to Reading Recovery, booster groups in kindergarten, and supported guided reading in Grades 1 & 2. Within grades 4 through 6, there are flexible leveled groupings to support the language and mathematics programs. Collaboration among grade partners assures a strong, consistent program at all levels.
Our Facilities
Blue Willow P.S. was officially opened in 2000. An addition was built onto the school a year later. Currently all classes are housed within the school and both students and teachers utilize a variety of learning spaces to make maximum use of our facilities. Classes in Grades 1 to 5 must share gym space to assure access to the gym for all students.
