Situated in the Town of Whitby, east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, our elementary school is located near Lynde Marsh, Whitby Harbour and the shores of Lake Ontario. We have approximately 650 students in grades Kindergarten to 8. The school’s setting provides students with excellent opportunities to learn how to make a difference in their community and build a strong environmental ethic. The building design includes an east-west orientation to maximize the use of sunlight as well solar-thermal water heating, a heat recovery unit, sun tunnels in the gym and a glass clerestory to allow natural light into the building. The school grounds incorporate landscaping with generous tree plantings, berms and four ‘outdoor classrooms.’
Port Whitby, in south Whitby, lies on the shore of Lake Ontario. It is a mixed area, featuring a marina and harbour, waterfront trails, a sports centre, shopping centre, and health centre. Housing is also mixed—the Whitby Shores development was built in the late 1990s and features single-detached homes and condo townhomes. A high rise condo development is located in the area, and there are also older homes and low-rise apartment buildings.
