Humber Valley Village Junior Middle School (HVV), established in 1951, is situated at 65 Hartfield Road, just west of Royal York Road and just north of Dundas Street. The school property lies within the valley of the Humber River, named in the early 1790s after the Humber River in north-east England. The school is the heart of the Humber Valley community. Most of the building is one storey, with 19 classrooms, a computer lab, a well-resourced library/PC Lab, 2 mobile wireless labs, music room, science room, visual arts room and two gymnasiums. The Friendship Garden, located at the front of the school, highlights our environmental focus. A before-and-after school program serves students from JK to Grade 8. 

The Arts at Humber Valley Village

We offer a plethora of arts programs at HVV to engage our students in a variety of arts-based experiences. Student artwork is proudly displayed throughout the school. Our middle school students participate in either strings or band and have the opportunity to be part of our stage band or chamber strings. Our students perform in two annual concerts and in a variety of music festivals. We put on a school musical every other year that involves most of the student body. We also host artists in the school, drama workshops and live performances by professional artists to enrich the students' arts experiences.

Platinum Eco School

Humber Valley Village is proud to be a certified Platinum Eco School. Our Eco Team comprised of students, parents and staff works to promote ecologically responsible and sustainable attitudes and behaviour throughout our school community. Students actively monitor energy use, waste reduction, recycling, a walk to school program and litterless lunches. We have designed and implemented a comprehensive greening plan for our extensive school grounds which includes the planting of many trees, the installation of landscape rocks and the maintenance of our butterfly garden.

Intramural Sports at Humber Valley Village

Our students are actively involved in a wide variety of intramural sports throughout the school year. We offer intramural programs for all students in grades 1 to 8 that include basketball, floor hockey, scooterball, soccer, dodgeball and volleyball. These programs are successfully run jointly by students and staff.

Interschool Sports at Humber Valley Village

Many of our students participate in interschool cross country running and track and field events. We also have interschool teams for a wide variety of sports, including basketball, ice hockey, slo-pitch, soccer and volleyball. Many conference and city championship banners are proudly displayed in our two gymnasiums.

Information Computer Technology

At HVV we are fortunate to have two stationary computer labs and two mobile labs to enhance the computer literacy skills of our students. We are also integrating the use of digital cameras, scanners and projection devices into our curriculum. In addition, we use SMART boards to further enrich our ICT learning. 

Student Leadership at HVV

There are many opportunities for student leadership at HVV. We have an active student council, student office monitors and announcers, big buddies, an Eco Team and Me to We student leaders. These student leaders organize school spirit days, middle school dances, school assemblies, fundraising efforts and environmental campaigns.

Student Life - Where You Belong

Students at HVV are fully invested in making our school the wonderful place of learning that it is. There are so many opportunities for students to become involved in the life of our school. There are extracurricular arts experiences, intramural sports, interschool sports, academic and interest clubs and student leadership roles. The development and promotion of social and ecological responsibility are important aspects of our school culture. Students often take the lead in promoting and organizing events such as local food drives, bake sales for a variety of donations, and toiletry drives for WomenAide. As a school we also participate in The Terry Fox Run, Jump Rope For Heart, used book drives, new toy drives and gently used winter clothing and sporting equipment drives. Our students continue to be ECO friendly and spearhead our efforts to reduce energy consumption through their lights out campaigns, our waste monitoring and reduction efforts, our recycling program, community clean-up campaigns and our walk to school and litterless lunches.

Parent and Community Engagement

At HVV we have a very active School Council and a large number of parent committees that support the educational, physical and social development of our students. Many parent volunteers assist in the library, classrooms, fundraising, excursions, environmental projects, help with coaching extracurricular sports and clubs. We host a large number of teacher candidates from many educational institutions such as Medaille, Ryerson, Humber College, Canisius College, Charles Sturt University, UOIT and OISE in addition to co-op secondary school students. We have forged community partnerships with, WomenAide, The Yonge Street Mission, our sister school, The United Way, Goodwill and Sleeping Children Around the World. Our goal is to foster a strong sense of social responsibility and to give back to people in need.
