How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students
At St. John the Evangelist School, we focus on four important areas of student development: Faith Development, Academic Development, Social Development and Extra-Curricular Development. Faith Development is rooted in the TCDSB Virtues and our Graduate Expectations. Monthly assemblies take place to help all students and staff center their day in our virtue of the month and daily activities are read out over the PA. As a further way of centering our school in the Virtues program, we have made our school a virtues zone as seen from the minute you walk into our school.
Classes visit St. John the Evangelist Church at least once a month to take part in school Masses. Father Maderak visits all classes regularly and there are many spiritual events, including Reconciliation, for the entire school. Gr. 2 and Gr. 8 students also have the opportunity to take part in weekly after school classes as a preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
In the area of Academic Development, all staff follow the ministry curriculum documents for their grade level. Special Education, ESL are all extra programs offered at our school. All programs provided at St. John the Evangelist school are in accordance with the Ministry of Education and the Toronto Catholic District School Board guidelines. Additional programs include French as a Second Language (grades 1-8), Vocal music (JK-8).
As part of Social Development, we strive to create a school where all students, staff, parents and visitors to our school feel safe and welcomed. Our ideas are centered in our Student Code of Conduct which has as its central point – Remember that God is inside everyone and live my life at home and school in a way that shows this. We are involved in many charitable events including food drives, ShareLife, and our very successful Me to We initiative where we strive to raise funds to support water programs in China.
There are many extra-curricular programs offered at St. John the Evangelist School. Students have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities including soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, softball, chess, choir, and W5H. We have a very active Leadership Team that helps coordinate many of the activities in the school. Our Eco-team has achieved gold certification and our Pay it Forward team is active in school events. We have struck a partnership with Father Henry Carr and have an active anti-bullying team and cheer leading squad.
