North Bendale opened in 1960 and is located near McCowan Road and Ellesmere, in the north corner of the Bendale Community. We are a unique small community school and some of our approximately 150 students are the second generation from their family to attend North Bendale. An environment has been established that ensures that all members of the school community are treated with respect, courtesy and dignity. We want our students to enjoy success and be inspired to be lifelong learners. We have established very rewarding partnerships with Toronto Police Services, Toronto Public Health, secondary schools, and local colleges and universities.
Family Literacy Night and The Home Reading Program
These initiatives are a great example of how beneficial the home and school connection can be. Each day every student brings home one or two "just right" books to read with their parents for homework. Students and parents are able to track improvement and celebrate success. Students continue to choose their next book from their extensive and well organized classroom library. Our goal is to ensure success and achieve high expectations for our readers.

Developing Character
At North Bendale, we believe that part of our mandate is to develop well rounded students who are prepared to be productive and positive citizens in a democratic world. North Bendale students are leaders in their community. All students practice and follow monthly character traits: respect, co-operation, responsibility, teamwork, honesty, kindness and caring, empathy, integrity, fairness and perseverance. North Bendale also uses the Zones of Regulation framework to teach skills in self-regulation. This provides a toolkit for students to deal with differing situations.

Environmental Education
Taking care of our environment is a critical component of our day to day functioning at North Bendale. Part of our students' focus is on reducing their footprint on the earth. Students participate in a variety of environmental initiatives, including Eco Club, litterless lunch, outdoor education, and community clean-ups.
The Arts
We provide a multitude of opportunities for students to develop skills in The Arts through in-class experiences in Music, Drama and Visual Arts and by participating in extracurricular activities. Our annual productions include a holiday concert, a talent show and a bi-yearly whole school musical.
Student Athletics
Students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of house league and competitive teams. Our coaches strive to instill in their athletes a sense of ethics, personal responsibility, and good sportsmanship. Students are expected to maintain high expectations in academics and during day to day interactions with others.
Special Needs
Our special needs classes have one teacher, one support staff. We believe that all children can learn and that we must establish high standards for all students. We offer students opportunities for integration as they are ready. We teach through a Strength Based approach to learning and we work collaboratively with colleagues, students and parents.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Learning is an experience and responsibility that is shared by students, staff, parents, and the community. Communication between home and school is essential.While supporting students to achieve their academic potential is our primary focus, students also have a multitude of opportunities to participate in extracurricular and leadership opportunities. Our student leaders are actively involved in providing our population with Spirit Days, eco initiatives, and extracurricular and house league athletic programs. Students fundraise in the fall for the Canadian Cancer Society through the Terry Fox Run, and in the spring for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart.
What Sets Us Apart
The warm, nurturing culture of the school is created by the strong partnership between home and school. Together, students, staff, volunteers, and a very active School Council create a community of learners committed to learning, caring, and sharing. The school consists of 10 classrooms, a gymnasium, a community room, and a library. Internet access is available in all classrooms to ensure technology is infused into all subject areas. The Learning Through The Arts Program and other performances and presentations are regularly offered to further enhance the students' knowledge and appreciation of, and skills in, Art, Drama, Music and Theatre.
Parent and Community Engagement
Our parents support our school by volunteering in the classrooms, at special events and on excursions. School Council meets on a regular basis to provide input to school operations, fundraise for enriched programming and facilitate community involvement. Our students support the Terry fox Foundation, Jump Rope For Heart We receive support from Toronto Public Health, Toronto Police Services, Aisling Discoveries and Bloorview MacMillan. We have visiting students from our secondary schools, Seneca College, Ryerson University and other Faculty of Educations.
