Mission Statement
Tecumseh's Mission Statement is to strive towards one's personal best through high expectations and students' successes and to foster social responsibility in a sharing, caring environment. The Tecumseh community is a socially and culturally diverse one. Students come here from Cornell, Willow Park and Golf Road public schools to transition successfully from a K - 6 to a senior school environment.
What We Value in our Environment
At Tecumseh, we are proud of the many academic, athletic and social accomplishments of our students. A student council, selected by fellow students, is an integral part of the organization. Character development is promoted by means of a school spirit and academic system called "Shooting Stars". Honour students are recognized at assemblies called "Academic All-Stars" and are presented with certificates. Parents are invited to share in their accomplishments.
Interesting Feature
History
Tecumseh, the first senior public school in Scarborough, is located near the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Scarborough Golf Club Road. Opening in 1968, it was named after the Shawnee warrior who supported the British and died during the War of 1812. Tecumseh means "Shooting Star" which is the name adopted by our sports teams. The student population is growing steadily and is currently at 290 with a staff of sixteen teachers.

Our School Focus for This School Year
We will work towards effectively implementing the Ontario curriculum. All aspects of a Middle School will be developed and we will prepare students for transition to high school. We will establish a full computer lab with a wide variety of language and numeracy programs with the aim of improving student technological skills.
Academic Achievement and Healthy Living
At Tecumseh we strive to create a learning environment which focuses on high expectations for all students. To improve student success, engaged teaching and strong study and organizational skills are emphasized. Students have the opportunity to participate in math days, science fairs and the Red Maple reading project. Physical education every day is provided.
Traditions
We have many traditions at Tecumseh including daily houseleague, eco and art clubs, and Uncrate the Sun where students plan and run events following a fun fair model. There are many opportunities for students to attend excursions to the Ontario Science Centre, ROM and Hillside.
Leadership Opportunities
Leadership opportunities begin in September where students can sign up to be office helpers or members of the cafeteria or announcement team. Grade 7's attend camp Robin Hood to hone their cooperative skills. Student council members are selected by peers and then a president and vice president are voted in by the student body.
Student Life - Where You Belong
Tecumseh has many excellent programs to offer its students. We are particularly proud of the music, sports and drama programs. Every student studies instrumental music throughout the year, thus providing the basis for our excellent band. Opportunities are provided for interested students to participate in the choir. A very popular and well organized house league sports program, in conjunction with several championship teams, contribute to the fine sports tradition at our school.
What Sets Us Apart
Special Education Programs
A variety of special education programs and services are offered to meet the needs of all students, including students with exceptionalities. Students' exceptionalities are identified through a formal review process undertaken by an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC). Students who are not formally identified receive extra support through our resource program, Licence to Learn, a peer tutoring programme and the after-school homework club. We have a breakfast program where five days a week healthy foods such as omelettes, cereal, pancakes and bagels are served by parents in the community. At 3:00, from Monday to Thursday, the Beyond 3:30 program begins. It consists of a homework period where help is provided, a recreational component and a snack made by the students in the program.
Parent and Community Engagement
We continue to establish ongoing partnerships with a variety of community businesses and agencies and invite guest speakers such as those from the Skills Canada, Junior Achievement, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Free the Children and the community police officer to partner with Tecumseh students to develop civic and social responsibility. We have an active school council participating in decision-making, fundraising and providing guest speakers. Volunteers assist with extra-curricular activities, in the operation of the library programs, and in the running of the sports programs.
