Our vision is to foster the academic, social, emotional and physical growth of every child. We do this by creating a safe, nurturing, inclusive learning community where student successes are celebrated. This will prepare our students to become independent lifelong learners who are respectful, responsible citizens of a global society.
Our mission is to have students actively engaged in authentic learning experiences which include opportunities for leadership and recognition of intellectual, physical and emotional successes of all students. Northwood Public School supports and promotes a collaborative partnership between the school, families and the community. We foster ongoing, professional growth through dialogue, team teaching and reflective practice.
Our teaching learning critical pathways in literacy as well as in numeracy provides opportunities for staff to engage in collaborative inquiry and planning, aimed towards making every student successful. Northwood teachers work together to plan lessons, moderate student work and identify strategies to enhance instructional practices/approach. Technology (in the form of LCD projectors, document cameras, netbooks, clickers and MOBIs) is used effectively in all classrooms to empower students and enhance learning to the greatest extent possible. Our Climate for Learning and Working committee reviews discipline protocols in school, including for the proactive character education program. The committee works to develop a safe, diverse and equitable learning environment that will promote student learning and success. Every month we hold a character traits assembly to recognize the students who demonstrate the six character traits. Students also enjoy extracurricular activities such as floor hockey, basketball, and karate offered to them during lunch hours.
The school council plays an active role by providing two lunch programs each week – Wednesdays with pizza and Fridays with Lunch Lady. Both programs offer students a healthy, hot lunch option that falls within the Food and Beverage policy regulations. Money from the lunch programs and other fundraisers goes back to students in the form of technology, books and field trips.
