Our School
History
The name of Armitage Village Public School was derived from the first settlers to the community. The most prominent settler was Amos Armitage. Our school mascot is student designed. Please visit our website.
Facilities
Armitage Village P.S. was officially opened in 1991. A child-care centre, Armitage Child Care Centre, owned and operated by Upper Canada Village Child Care is located at Armitage Village P.S. They provide both a before/after school and all day preschool program.
Programs
As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Armitage Village P.S. supports student learning through the curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and many other co-curricular activities. Rainbows: Weekly support groups for our children (JK through eight), who have experienced the loss of someone close to them or who are living in single parent or stepfamilies.
A focus on literacy: Reading Buddies program, Red Maple and Silver Birch programs, Primary Book Room , Junior Book Room, Guided Reading programs, and Booster Groups. Assessment is carried out using the PM Benchmark resource in the Primary Diivision and the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) in the Junior and Intermediate Divisions. A focus on The Arts: We have an intermediate instrumental band and a primary/junior/intermediate choir. We offer a wide variety of sports teams and clubs. A focus on technology: Integration of computers into curriculum delivery and classroom programming. Recent hardware acquisitions include a Smart Board, LCD projector and a mobile cart housing a set of laptop computers.
Assessment and Evaluation: At Armitage Village we utilize a variety of Assessment and Evaluation strategies including learning activities using the levels 1 to 4 of the Ontario Curriculum and the YRDSB Guidelines for Assessment and Evaluation. Parents, students and teachers use the language of the level descriptors and see level 3 as meeting the Ministry Curriculum expectation. Classroom work is assessed and evaluated utilizing a variety of strategies reflecting current knowledge. Rubrics are used across the curriculum where applicable. Each year the staff provides parent information nights that seek to increase parent and student understanding of the assessment and evaluation language and strategies used.

Safe and Supportive Schools/Character Education/Equity Education
Every student has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. The York Region District School Board has a Safe Schools Policy and a defined procedure to implement the policy. Both the policy and procedure support the view that student discipline involves a continuum of support including prevention, intervention and appropriate consequences. The YRDSB remains committed to the inclusion of anti-racist and equity education in its policies and programs.
