The Vanier neighbourhood is in southwest Oshawa, and is a mixed area of residential subdivisions, large areas of retail/commercial, as well as undeveloped, open lands. Oshawa's large shopping mall, Oshawa Centre, is in the northeast region of Vanier, and there is also a shopping centre in the southwest. A recreation complex is in the west end, as well as the Durham campus of Trent University. Vanier's eastern boundary is the Oshawa Creek and the bike trail that runs along it. Housing is mixed, with single-detached homes, semi-detached, duplexes, low-rise apartment complexes, and townhomes. This is an older neighbourhood, with homes varying in age and style, mostly bungalows and side-splits from around the 1950s-1970s, as well as some older, 2-storey frame homes.
