S.A. Cawker Public School opened its doors in 1989 in scenic Port Perry on Lake Scugog. Scugog Township is predominantly a farming, rural community, housing a rapidly growing urban community. The first Scugog school began in 1827 as a missionary school on what is now the Port Perry waterfront. Presently, S.A. Cawker houses over 500 junior kindergarten to grade 8 students who live in the core of Port Perry, on Scugog Island and the rural area north of Port Perry to Seagrave. Students from the hamlets of Epsom, Greenbank, and Seagrave attend S.A. Cawker for grades 7 and 8.
Port Perry serves as the administrative and commercial centre for the township of Scugog and serves as a hub for many small communities in the Scugog area, such as Greenbank, Raglan, Caesarea, Blackstock and Nestleton/Nestleton Station. The village was amalgamated with Cartwright, Reach and Scugog Townships to form the Township of Scugog in 1974 upon the creation of the Regional Municipality of Durham. Located at the basin of the Trent-Severn Waterways is Lake Scugog, one of Ontario's largest man-made lakes.
