Our progressive Jewish education, combined with the global outlook of our International Baccalaureate Programme, shapes the way our students look at the world and their Judaism: with curiosity, with personal meaning and with a sense of collective responsibility.
Leo Baeck graduates are equipped with the knowledge of Jewish tradition, the spirit of Tikkun Olam and the confidence and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate our complex world, as global citizens and as modern Jews.
Canada’s first Jewish IB World School
Being an International Baccalaureate school means academic excellence, innovative educational practice, and globally-minded students with critical thinking skills. Our dynamic approach to learning fosters curiosity, creativity, interdisciplinary connections and self-reflection. We recently became a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), which will see our whole school unified under the IB umbrella.
We equip our students with the ability to be nimble and adaptive. We value hands-on, experiential learning, welcoming big ideas that are grounded in real world issues. Students are primed to think outside of the box, to grow through collaboration and to reflect on and assess their own development.
Ideal balance of Judaic and general studies
Our program is split in thirds, offering the best of all worlds: 1/3 each of Language Arts/Social Studies, Math/Science and Hebrew/Judaic Studies. We offer a well rounded, comprehensive program incorporating athletics, music, drama, art, technology, library science and French (beginning in SK) along with a range of extracurriculars.
Modern, meaningful Judaism
Within a spiritually rich environment, Leo Baeck instills progressive, egalitarian Jewish values, an ethic of Tikkun Olam (social justice), and love of Israel. Our students are empowered with a strong foundation in Jewish prayer and ritual, while exposed to the concept of personal choice and diversity in Jewish identity and practice.
Girls and boys both wear kippot during tefillah, read Torah when they come of age and have equal obligations in all religious rituals. Students lead weekly Kabbalat Shabbat services, regular Shacharit and Rosh Chodesh services and many holiday-specific services throughout the year. Our approach to prayer and ritual is joyful, vibrant, musical and accessible.
Unique approach to pedagogy
Today’s classrooms don’t resemble those of the past. How we teach and assess has evolved over the years. Our cutting-edge pedagogy, infused with IB philosophy, focuses on approaches to learning and the acquisition of strategic, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our students learn how to learn, developing the techniques and knowledge needed to become lifelong learners and successful navigators of the 21st century.
Success and achievement
Our students leave Leo Baeck prepared for the academic challenges that follow graduation. Success beyond Leo Baeck is evidenced by overwhelmingly high academic performance in high school, and a legacy of alumni who are lifelong learners, leaders and agents of social change.
