Silverthorn Community School is located south of Eglinton, West of Keele. Currently our enrollment is approximately 330 students who are representative of families from an array of cultural backgrounds. As a K-8 school we offer a learning environment where staff, students and the community enjoy learning and growing together. In addition to our FDK to 8 programs, we offer two Intensive Support Programs; our Behaviour class for students who are having trouble adjusting to our regular school programs and our Developmentally Delayed for students who require more one on one support. At Silverthorn CS we work hard to create a safe, caring and stimulating environment where everyone is valued as unique individuals.
Parenting and Family Literacy Centre
Our Parenting and Family Literacy Centre invites parents with preschoolers to come into the school for a program of activities, which they can enjoy with their young children, while providing them with support for their parenting. In addition, families receive information on community resources, support, and education in parenting, and an early childhood development program for their children.

Me to WE at Silverthorn
This year, our group is comprised of approximately twenty students from grades five to eight, who are eager to promote social justice, locally and globally. One of our missions is to create awareness in our community about change in the world that needs to occur in the areas of child labour, community/village sustainability, and environmental issues.
The Arts
The Arts are alive at Silverthorn Community School! Throughout the year, we offer students opportunities to participate in a variety of specialized programs including vocal, recorder, drumming, and Orff. Our community annually looks forward to our Spring concert or stage productions, which have in the past included Aladdin and Music & Dance Around The World.
Extreme Engineering Club
Extreme Engineering Club for junior grades meets once a week at lunch in our Science Lab, where students are given an engineering challenge incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students are encouraged to complete their challenge in a specific time frame. Fun, enjoyment, and edge-of-your seat excitement takes place all period long.
Nutrition Program
Silverthorn’s Nutrition Program consists of a morning meal, and a hot lunch, both of which are available to students on a daily basis. The program is funded in part through grants, and through parent contributions. The morning meal is delivered to students in class around mid-morning, and includes items from three food groups.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Silverthorn Community School provides many opportunities for student engagement in the life of the school beyond the classroom. Teachers and students work within the school as well as the community building positive experiences for all students. Although teaching and learning are at the centre of learning, the school provides many extra-curricular activities that focus on the development of the individual as a well-rounded student. The Student Council assists with fundraising, building school spirit and acts as the voice of their peers. The strings program is made up of students in grade 6-8 and it provides opportunities for students to improve and demonstrate their musical skills and talents. Students have the opportunity to join various school teams to challenge sport-minded students. To recognize students who have successfully demonstrated the monthly character traits throughout the school community, Character Education assemblies are held. Silverthorn provides something for all types of learners. Our efforts focus on the importance of knowing each student as an individual and mentoring and monitoring them as they develop their academic, social and leadership skills.
What Sets Us Apart
At Silverthorn Community School, we emphasize a positive discipline approach by teaching the students what they need to know and how to act. This encourages students to build self-esteem and confidence, respect differences and develop respect between students and adults. We have found that student success comes from engaging students in the planning process and by giving them opportunities for additional practice in areas where they require support. Students are constantly encouraged to set goals and reflect on their learning which empowers them to fulfill their future endeavors.
Parent and Community Engagement
Our School Parent Council plays an active role in both the daily life of the school and the community. The School Council assists with fundraising activities throughout the year. These activities provide unique opportunities for families to be a part of the school community. Our Fun Fair which takes place in June is a big attraction and something everyone looks forward to attending. We are always looking for volunteers to assist, parents, former students, and community members are welcome.
