Summit Heights is a small, dynamic school of approximately 380 students and 40 staff members. A third of our students walk to school. Approximately 100 students come from neighbouring schools and are bussed to Summit daily for our Gifted ISP programs. The small size of our school allows for school administration and staff to get to know our students on a personal level very quickly. Our small school atmosphere also affords us the opportunity to develop ongoing positive relationships with families, school council and community agencies. Teaching staff at Summit Heights are committed to providing the very best learning environment for their students.
Technology
As a school community, our goal is to create an inspiring place where children can learn, grow and gain the knowledge and skills they need to prepare for the future. To support this focus, the Summit Heights school community has partnered with the School Advisory Council to purchase Smartboards, technology tools and computers for all classrooms, Kindergarten through Grade 6. We have a dedicated computer lab to accommodate full classes at one time. Teaching staff regularly engage in professional development to support this school-wide commitment to innovative approaches to cross-curricular literacy.

Learning at Summit Heights
Our grade six student results on province-wide assessments has remained consistently high. Our grade three results have provided us with an opportunity to identify students areas of strengths and needs. We are in the process of putting in place the necessary curriculum supports and resources to help all students achieve at or above the provincial level by the end of grade six. We believe all students are able to reach high levels of achievement and as a school we are committed to developing our knowledge and skills to support all learners.

Literacy
Summit Heights teachers and staff participate in a variety of professional development opportunities in order to provide effective programs to meet their students needs. This year the focus is on reading and making connections to the text. As a school we are investing in short stories and non-fiction text.
Numeracy
This year at Summit Heights we will continue our school-wide focus in mathematics on problem-solving. Grade 3 and 6 teachers will be teaching students to express how they arrived at mathematical answers. Students will be engaged in problem solving by representing their mathematical thinking in different ways and working cooperatively with peers.
Safe and Caring Schools
Summit Heights has an active Safe and Caring Schools Committee. Our goal this year is to continue to enhance the school learning environment by creating a safer, healthier and inclusive community. This will be achieved through: Eco-schools, Student Leadership, extra-curricular opportunities, and partnering with and fundraising for community agencies and groups.
The Arts
Summit Heights offers many opportunities for students to engage in the Arts, particularly in performing arts and dance. Our SAC are major supporters of providing enrichment in our Arts programming.

Student Life - Where You Belong
There are a plethora of activities available to students at Summit Heights: Eco Team, Guitar Club, Choir, French Club, Colouring Club, Mathematics, Yearbook Club, Basketball, Volleyball, Track and Field, Soccer, Cross Country Running and Intramurals such as Bench Ball, Floor Hockey and Scooter Board. Students have opportunities to: serve as student leaders, participate in monthly assemblies and presentations, act as Reading Buddies and Classroom Helpers. School -wide spirit events and fundraisers include: Welcome Back BBQ, Terry Fox Run, Free The Children, Walk to School Day, Beach Day Boogie, Hats off to Earth Day, Grandpals Day, Pizza and Sub Lunch Days. Parent Council Program Coordinators offer a variety of paid lunchtime activities daily: Chess, Yoga, Mad Science, FIMO, Baking, ICompute, Artoonz, Kids on Stage, Crafty Couture, Jazz/Hip Hop, Scrapbooking, Rock-It-Out.

Summit Heights is a small community school that serves a diverse student population. The school offers both regular and special education programs, which include Gifted and Developmental Disabilities classrooms. Teaching staff, administration, school council and families work together to create a positive, inclusive learning culture. At Summit teaching staff dedicate themselves to providing students with a well-rounded curriculum with an emphasis on technology, the environment and the arts, and a calendar year filled with extra-curricular opportunities. Teachers coach an array of teams, coordinate intramurals and instruct a variety of clubs. There is a wide selection of lunchtime programs as well and never a shortage of school spirit or pride! Much of the learning that takes place at Summit Heights is supported by a strong School Council and a committed parent community. Through council fundraising efforts students at Summit benefit from increased access to technology tools, the arts, special events and excursions.
Parent and Community Engagement
Summit Heights has a very active School Advisory Council that meets regularly throughout the year. They partner with School Administration and teaching staff to support a positive school atmosphere focused on student success. Council members organize lunchtime programs, Safe Arrival, special lunches, Welcome Back and Year End BBQ's, New Parent Tea and Graduation. The Council also provides funds for Scientist in The School, visiting Artists, Plays and Guest Speakers. Providing funds for educational enhancements, such as Smartboards, computers and technology tools is a priority. School Council works with teachers to purchase classroom items and support field trips that enhance the learning environment. School Council welcomes all parents to participate in school events and invites them to come out to School Advisory Council meetings.
