Emily Carr Public School is a Kindergarten to Grade 8 dual track school. The school serves approximately 400 students representing a diverse population. We offer an Extended French Program for students in Grade 4 to Grade 8. We also serve special needs children through the special education programs in the school. Our goal is to develop a well-rounded, self-disciplined child with a positive sense of self-worth. We foster an atmosphere that values respect, achieving excellence, personal initiative, co-operation, and effort. We believe that the positive, safe, and caring climate at Emily Carr enhances the full academic, social, and emotional development of every child, as does building partnerships between the school, home and community.
Assessment and School Improvement Planning
The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning. Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using strategies such as Guided Practice, Differentiated Instruction, Descriptive Feedback, Success Criteria, Learning Goals, projects, class presentations, in-class tasks, homework assignments, and classroom observations.
Regular Instructional Programs
English, English as a Second Language and French. Mathematics, Science and Technology, The Arts - Music, Visual Arts, Drama and Dance, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education. Grades 7-8: History and Geography and Guidance. A variety of Special Education programs and services are offered to meet the needs of all students, including students with exceptionalities.

Focus on Numeracy and Literacy Skills
Our focus is to enhance student achievement in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy through staff professional development workshops in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. We are also working on improving student achievement through the implementation of D.R.A. (Developmental Reading Assessments) at the Primary Level and CASI in the Junior and Intermediate grades.
Information Technology
At Emily Carr, we are preparing our students for the 21st Century by incorporating technology into our teaching practice. We have 9 SMART Boards and 1 Promethean Board that are in classrooms, in addition to regularly scheduled classes in our computer lab. We have recently acquired a mobile laptop lab, in addition to several Ipads, and Macbooks for student use.
What Our School Is Planning For This Year
Our School Improvement Plan for the upcoming school year will continue to focus on Ministry and Board initiatives and priorities, school-based assessments and actively involving parents. Our staff is actively involved in Professional Learning Communities that focus on improving student achievement. We continue to actively engage our parents as partners in education.
Nutrition Program
Emily Carr offers a healthy snack program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 every day. Our parent volunteers, along with our snack co-ordinator prepare the nutritious snacks for our students.

Student Life - Where You Belong
There are so many opportunities for students to get involved in student life at Emily Carr P.S. There is something for everyone. Students can participate in a wide range of school sports teams, clubs, various choirs and bands. Some of the opportunities that have been provided to students include: Cross country, Volleyball, Basketball, Bordenball, Intermediate band, Dance Club, Student Council, Choir, School Spirit Days, Terry Fox Walk, Food drive, Parent Academy, Cultural Heritage Night, Continuing Education- Math and Literacy Program, Girls to Women Club, Boys to Men Club

Emily Carr has an Extended French Program for Grades 4 to 8 students. Our music program tradition is exemplary. We have won various gold medal awards in the Kiwanis Music Festival. Our extra-curricular activities are numerous. Emily Carr has a dedicated and caring staff.
