Millwood Students will always WORK, LEARN, and be RESPONSIBLE. Millwood School became a dual track school in 1983, offering regular English programs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 and French Immersion programs from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Our mission is to ensure that our students achieve their highest levels of academic and personal development. As an interactive group of energetic and committed staff, students, parents and community partners, we create a supportive and safe learning environment, focused on a superior foundation for life.
Student Activities
Millwood students are provided with many activities over the course of the year. Primary and Junior students are able to choose from a variety of extra curricular activites, depending on the term. Some of these activities include: Chess Club, recorder club, Silver Birch, Prix Tamarack, Cooking Club, intramurals, Junior Choir, etc. In addition, our Grade 5's are expected to sign up for 2-4 leadership opportunities that occur over the course of the year. This will help to develop confidence, responsibility and maturity and they look to transition to middle school.
Sports
Millwood students have a wide variety of interschool sports in which we participate. Primary students are able to tryout for Cross Country in the Fall, Swimming in the Winter and Track and Field in the Spring. In addition to the above sports, Junior students (Gr 4 + 5) are able to try out for: Soccer, Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, and Hockey.
Curriculum
Millwood teachers collaborate with each other and with School Board support personnel to remain current in their own professional practice and to establish best teaching practice. The Primary students are located down one hall and the Junior students are located in another wing. English and French students and teachers in each panel are integrated to facilitate learning.
Student Life - Where You Belong
Millwood students have a very active environment, both inside and outside the classroom. There is a buzz in the air as students collaborate in various school projects and in extra curricular activities (eg: students can seen working in the halls with a partner, or stretching and warming up for physical activities, waiting for space availability). Students are recognized in a variety of ways, the most notable is our monthly Millwood Marvel Assembly, at which a student is chosen from each class for a specified monthly TDSB Character Trait. Our graduating students all have a chance to visit the feeder Middle School - French Immersion students to Hilltop M.S. and English to Bloordale Middle School. Every year all the Grade 5's go on an overnight excursion to an outdoor centre which provides an opportunity to bond with their peers. This year we plan to go to the Toronto Island Outdoor Ed Centre in the fall. There are a number of initiatives provided to all students to make the curriculum more meaningful and provide real-life experiences, such as Scientists in the School and a variety of excursions outside the school.
What Sets Us Apart
Throughout the year, Millwood students learn about social and environmental issues which inspire them to organize a variety of events or initiatives to support various causes (eg: Sleeping Children Around the World, Terry Fox Run, Royal Legion Poppy Fund, Youth Without Shelter, CHUM Christmas Wish List, etc.) This year our Social Justice League will write, publish and sell one French and one English book with the proceeds going to two schools in Kenya. In addition, the students will write penpal letters to the Kenyan students. Our parent and community members are very connected to the school and they actively support Millwood programs in many different ways
