Abacus Montessori is a non-denominational cosmopolitan school in Toronto that offers the widely acclaimed Montessori curriculum to children. Our mandate at Abacus is to offer our students an academic program that arouses their natural curiosity, compels them to question, and challenges their intellectual abilities – ultimately instilling a lifelong love of learning. By directing children through a meticulously prepared environment, our well-trained and qualified teachers build fundamental skills by encouraging strong work habits, critical thinking, problem solving, and self-help skills. Our key to success is ensuring our children learn in a nurturing and non-competitive atmosphere.

A History of Excellence

Abacus Montessori was founded by Jayanthi Rajagopalan, who holds an International Montessori Diploma from the Montessori Centre in London, England.She has several years of teaching experience, including two years in London, England. Jayanthi, also the principal of the school, has trained Montessori instructors for several years as a Master Teacher with the Canadian Montessori Teacher Education Institute. She has attended several workshops and seminars on the Montessori Method in Canada and abroad. She also conducts parent education seminars at Abacus Montessori. All of the teachers and assistants hold a Montessori or an Early Childhood Education Diploma or a relevant certificate from a recognized institution. They are well experienced and bring in their own unique input to their program.

Preparing Children for the 'Real World'

Elementary Montessori students learn through discovery. No answers are given to them; rather they are encouraged to look for them. Students learn to conduct research independently and make presentations. There is some memorization of math facts, spellings and basic definitions of abstract concepts, as one might find in traditional curricula. But students are also encouraged to set learning goals for themselves and take responsibility for their own learning. In effect, they learn how to learn and are therefore highly motivated.
