Ecole Elmlea Junior School is located in the Rexdale community at the 401 and Islington Avenue. The school opened in 1952 for English learners in the local attendance area. In 1976, French Immersion students from various home schools located between Eglinton and Steeles Avenue began to attend. Elmlea serves close to 500 students representing a number of different language and cultural groups. It is a dual track school offering both regular English and French Immersion programs and remains the French Immersion Home School for many area feeder schools. For grade 6, English track students move on to the Elms for grade 6 and the French Immersion track students move on to Hilltop Middle School.
Our School
Elmlea staff is committed to teach and co-learn with students -to think intensively and critically. At Elmlea, through everything we do each day- we focus on ‘Intelligence PLUS Character’. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge, it is about inspiring our students to choose better for themselves. Beyond the classroom, students are offered co-curricular opportunities to consider available options and make their best choices. We strive to take our teaching/learning beyond the absorption of facts, and help EACH student at Elmlea develop a love of learning.
Our Staff
Teachers have a range of professional additional qualifications in French as a Second Language, Special Education, Physical Education, Music, and English as a Second Language, to name a few. They participate in professional development activities in literacy and numeracy, and technology integration in classrooms, and more.

Morning Meal
Thanks to our dedicated staff and student leaders, and with our partnership with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Elmlea offers a nutritious 'morning meal' snack every day to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Parents subsidize this program through their donations and volunteering support.
Literacy Focus
With a strong emphasis on developing higher order critical thinking skills, the Literacy focus of the school remains improving student achievement. All students are encouraged to practise daily reading at home to compliment their learning in the school.
Numeracy Focus
With a consistent focus on problem solving, students are exposed to the use of various strategies. We have added an additional focus on developing mental math and computational fluency, the result of which we expect to strongly support our students' efforts with problem solving.
Student Life - Where You Belong
Elmlea students are always seeking ways to help others. They are involved in community service projects each year, throughout the year. These endeavours create invaluable opportunities for our students to become more knowledgeable local and global citizens. Students create stories and pieces of art work that are displayed around the school for all students and the community to enjoy. Students are engaged in extra curricular activities over the lunch hour. Throughout the year they enjoy many clubs. In addition teachers run seasonal events with the students. Many of our students also enjoy competing on our various sports teams and representing the school against students and teams from around the TDSB.
What Sets Us Apart
We are proud of being a dual track school with a culturally and ethnically diverse school community, we continue to honour the diverse cultural groups by recognizing and celebrating similarities and differences. Our librarian continues to acquire resources to reflect our community. As a school we provide individualized programming and resource support in French and English. At Elmlea we emphasize enhanced programming, in both French and English, through interactive technology. Students have multiple means of representations, engagement, and expression.
Parent and Community Engagement
The school engages families in the life of the school through the School Advisory Council (SAC), volunteering in classrooms and on field trips, and evening family events. Parent volunteers can be involved at school by working along side educators in classrooms, reading with students, assisting with snack programme, fundraising, sports, as well as through the Book Fairs. Our Council meets throughout the year and is dedicated to strengthening educational opportunities and partnerships with the parents, teachers, staff and community. Parent workshops and information sessions are held during the year.
