Sloane Public School is located in the Victoria Village community on the west side of Sloane Avenue, south of Wigmore Drive. Sloane Public School is an integral part of the community having already celebrated its 50th anniversary. Our school serves about 300 students representing many different language groups. Many of our students speak English as a second language. Sloane is a community-oriented school offering programming from Grades JK to 5. We value a safe and caring learning environment that promotes equity, diversity and respect. Staff is committed to delivering challenging and exciting programs and to ensuring that every child works to their potential and experiences success and a high level of achievement in all areas. 

Extended Day Program (EDP)

We are pleased to also be able to provide the Extended Day Program (EDP) which provides seamless learning experiences and programming for children from Kindergarten to grade 5 before school starts and at the end of the school day. This program is delivered by TDSB Designated Early Childhood Educators who engage children in various explorations and learning opportunities to support the development of skills such as collaboration, responsibility, problem-solving, creativity, citizenship and leadership through interesting activities. Two nutritious snacks per day are also provided during the program.

Early Learning Program

The Early Learning Program is a full day program for Kindergarten students. The program benefits the development of a child's academic and social skills, and supports an easier transition to Grade One. Teachers and Early Childhood Educators work in partnership in the classroom to enable students to learn and grow.

Reading Clubs

We are very excited about our reading clubs. The Blue Spruce Book Club is a primary reading program that introduces recently published Canadian children's picture books. The Silver Birch Book Club promotes Canadian fiction and nonfiction books. The goals of the program include reading enjoyment, awareness of Canadian authors, and providing quality discussion.

Physical and Health Literacy

The staff and students at Sloane PS know that being physically active leads to academic success. When we move our bodies we sharpen our mind! That is why Sloane PS is part of the TDSB Fit for Life program. This program is designed to physically and mentally prepare students to be able to reach their academic potential. 

Nutritional Program

Our nutrition program currently provides a snack four times a week which is available to all students. A concentration of fruits, vegetables and dairy products are distributed by a snack coordinator and volunteers. The importance of good nutrition is emphasized through our nutrition and health and physical education programs.

Music at Sloane

Students participate in regular music classes with a music specialist teacher. Singing, movement and playing instruments are enjoyed by all. Students have the opportunity to engage with a variety of instruments including xylophones, metallophones, recorders, drums, and percussion instruments. They explore, create, and evaluate music from diverse cultures and styles.

Student Life - Where You Belong

The daily contributions and efforts of our students are evident throughout the year. Students are given a variety of interesting opportunities and choices that allows for the development and growth of their skills. The school day begins with student read announcements that includes character and environmental messages.These messages are often put together by students. Oral communication skills are further enhanced during our speech arts, talent show, concert and musical presentations. These performances are showcased to parents. Students are recognized for their achievement during our monthly and year-end assemblies which are attended by guests that includes our local MP, MPP, and trustee. Once a month spirit day themes are celebrated that includes backwards day, sports day, hat day, and other themes as selected by classes. Students can participate and work on their skills in activities such as basketball, gymnastics, soccer and volleyball, to name a few. Our school also takes part in competitive activities such as track and field. Students are proud to wear their Sloane school shirts known as the "Sloane Sharks" - with the motto being "An Appetite for Learning". 

What Sets Us Apart

We have an After School Recreation Program (ARC) provided by the City of Toronto. We are supported by staff that includes a social worker, psychologist, speech language pathologist, settlement worker, public health nurse, and community resource officer. We endeavour to reach out to our community for support that includes both parent and non-parent volunteers. We participate annually in school fundraisers that includes the Terry Fox Run/Walk and Jump Rope for Heart. Our vast yard is adjacent to City property which includes a park and ravine which is available to us for walks and nature studies. We have also started our own outdoor classroom which has wood chips and seating rocks, and nearby new trees, and this has become a popular place for students to sit, read, think or enjoy the scenery

Parent and Community Engagement

Our School Council plays an important and supportive role with school endeavours, specifically in the areas of curriculum enhancement, special events and fundraising. The annual fun fair is a huge undertaking that is well supported by the community. Parent and community volunteers assist both students and staff in the classrooms, library, and during special events and extracurricular activities. Monthly newsletters and a newly developed website share school wide information. We make use of local venues that include visits to the public library, local community centre (arena), ravine and nearby parks. Collaboration with local social/medical agencies, police (community resource officer), fire departments, and various universities and colleges further support school needs and goals.
