At Claireville, we are dedicated to the success of each student. Our primary goal is to foster the development of the whole child and to guide students toward becoming young adults who have a positive self image and the skills necessary to contribute to society. The school is just over 48 years old and has undergone three additions. Claireville is home to a staff of more than 45 dynamic professionals and is known for its clean, warm, and welcoming environment. The approximately 250 students who attend Claireville Jr. School are from diverse cultures, races and ethnic backgrounds. More than half of our students speak English as a second language and represent 16 different languages.
Community Partnership
At Claireville, we have a strong Community Partnership with Etobicoke Children's Centre where the focus is engaging students in Social Skills Group to work on Friendships and Team Building Skills, as well as providing students with opportunities to develop problem solving skills. We host several parent evenings in Language, Math, Health and Wellness. Our focus is on supporting all families, especially our ELL Learners. A key focus is staff development. Over 70 percent of teachers hold Math AQ Part One and 50 percent of our teachers hold Math AQ Part Two.
High Expectations
At Claireville, we have a culture of high expectations for all our students across the curriculum. We offer a comprehensive literacy and numeracy program that promotes higher order thinking among our students. Our dedicated teachers and support staff collaboratively plan through effective Professional Learning Communities to ensure there is an inclusive teaching and learning environment that reflects the diverse strengths and needs of our students. Technology
Students' use of technology outside of the classroom raises the bar for its use within the classroom, making it an important component for student engagement. That is why at Claireville instruction is enhanced by Smart Board, IPADS and laptops. Our students are involved in blogging, video and photo editing recording and creating multi-media projects.
Morning Meal Program
We know that students who eat a healthy breakfast regularly, achieve better grades and are less likely to be at-risk. According to a TDSB Report, students who eat breakfast achieve results up to 14% higher in learning skills, including independent work, initiative, class participation and problem solving. Thus, we are pleased to provide a Morning Meal Program.
Literacy
A Balanced Literacy Program strikes a balance between both whole language and phonics.The strongest elements of each are incorporated into a literacy program that aims to guide students toward proficient and lifelong reading. The five different components of a Balanced Literacy Program are read aloud, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, and word study.
Mathematics
Claireville staff use an inquiry-based learning method through the three part lesson to teach mathematics. Students are actively engage in solving the problem. They work in small groups, in pairs, and individually to solve a problem and record the mathematical thinking they used to develop solutions.

Student Life - Where You Belong
The Claireville student body has many opportunities to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities such as the Environment Club, Spelling Bee, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, Cricket, Forest Reading Club and Silver Birch are just a few activities that enhance student life at Claireville. Our staff work hard to promote positive social behaviour within our school and community. Our students also have opportunities to attend many excursions such as the Metro Zoo, Humber Arboretum, Etobicoke Field Studies Centre and Albion Hills. Our students also participate in the DareArts Program and the EngageArts Through Literacy Program to enhance their learning opportunities.
What Sets Us Apart
The Arts at Claireville is a major focus. In addition to integrating The Arts in all areas of the curriculum, we focus on Music. Music is linked to academic performance in math and is an asset to students who want to reach their full learning potential throughout their lives. Music is important because it allows students to portray an 'image' to the outside world and satisfy their emotional needs. At Claireville, we have expanded our music program to include drumming. We also have Kindergarten and Primary Orff. Claireville is also a TRIBES school where creating a positive school or classroom environment is the most effective way to improve behaviour and learning. Our students achieve because they feel included and appreciated by peers and teachers, are respected for their different abilities, cultures, gender, interests and dreams, are actively involved in their own learning and have positive expectations from others that they will succeed.
Parent and Community Engagement
Claireville enjoys many partnerships to support student achievement. Partnerships include a Holiday Food Drive with the Daily Bread; Co-op Student placements from local high schools; Teacher Candidates from York University, U of T and other Faculties of Education. There are also Early Childhood Educators and Child and Youth Worker placements from Ryerson University, George Brown, Sheridan College and Humber College. We also have Nursing Student placements from Humber College as well. We also have a strong partnership with Etobicoke Centre for Children and Families who host a Friendship Group for our students. Our School Council works closely with our Administration to address common goals and concerns. The School Council conducts fundraising activities in order to support school programs, as well as projects initiated by the council.
