History
Glad Park Public School is named after the street on which it is located in the town of Stouffville. The school officially opened on October 6, 1997. Our school motto is “Learning for Life” and the school mascot is the Grizzly Bear.
Facilities
Glad Park PS is a dual track school with JK to Grade 8 in the English track and Grade 3 to 8 in the French Immersion track. Students in Grades 1 and 2 French Immersion attend nearby Harry Bowes PS.
In addition to having a before and after school program (privately run), we have many community based organizations use our facility for evening programs. Our exterior property includes: a playground, soccer field, paved play area (basketball nets, low organization/cooperative games, etc.), baseball diamond, and an outdoor classroom called the “Peace Garden”.
At present, roughly 730 JK-8 students attend Glad Park Public School.
Programs
As with each school in the York Region District School Board, Glad Park P.S. supports student learning through the curriculum standards set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and many other co-curricular activities.
A focus on literacy and learning - A focus on literacy forms the foundation of improvement planning at Glad Park P.S. We strive to provide students with the necessary skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing, with a current focus on student writing. Professional development is provided for school staff by Administration, YRDSB Consultants, Stouffville Learning Network, and Glad Park P.S. Staff Members (e.g., Glad Park P.S. Literacy Team). The following school programs and resources have supported us with this goal: Reading Recovery (tutoring for Grade 1 students who are not progressing at the expected rate), Links to Literacy (booster support programs for primary students), Parents as Partners (literacy supports for parents), and Monthly Writing Competitions (sponsored by the School Council).
A focus on assistive technology - We are committed to attaining, using, and learning about the many forms of assistive technology that support staff and students.
A focus on student leadership - We have an active (non-elected), problem solving student leadership council that focuses much of their attention on our school goal of developing and sustaining a respectful school (e.g., charitable fundraising, "Me to We" activities).
A focus on whole child education - We offer a wide variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities (e.g., athletics, arts, clubs). Some of those activities include: Musical Productions (e.g., Willy Wonka), Math Competitions (e.g., Gauss), Games Club, Public Speaking, Spelling Bee, Field Trips, Winter Electives (Downhill Skiing, Skating), Seasonal Concerts, Fundraising (e.g., PGL, Terry Fox Run, Quarters for Kids), Together We're Better YRDSB Student Conference Team, You're the Chef Cooking Club, Athletic Teams (Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Badminton, Cross-Country Running, Track & Field, Relay, Swimming), Play Days, Student Leadership Council, Intramurals, ECO Club, Book Fair, Health & Safety Club, Student Writing Contest, VIP, Student Success Assembly, Swim to Survive, Scientist in the School, Arts Performances, Spirit Days, Knitting Club, Girls Club, Yearbook, and Peer Mediation.
