Central Newmarket is a historic area that was once a farming community and incorporated as a village in 1857. Today the area features residential areas in the centre, with commercial and service areas lining the thoroughfares that border the area: Yonge Street to the west, Davis Drive to the north, Bayview Drive to the east, and Mulock Drive to the south. Newmarket's Main Street runs through this neighbourhood. The area has a great variety of features; historic buildings, town hall, museum, offices, the Riverwalk Commons, trails, bike paths, parks, Fairy Lake, library, and pubs and cafés. Housing in the core is mostly single detached in a real mix of age and architectural styles, from century homes to bungalows. There are also townhomes and low-rise apartment buildings.
