Opened in 1990, Stephen G. Saywell P.S. is located in the western boundary of Oshawa. It provides a wide variety of programs from JK to grade 8 for approximately 400 students. The school and its community work together to meet the academic, physical, emotional and social needs of the students. Stephen G. Saywell Public School has a strong partnership with its School Community Council. Numerous volunteers work co-operatively with our dedicated and hardworking staff in achieving our common goals. The school includes a Schoolhouse Playcare Centre; as well as providing a location for community groups. School programs include a Junior/Intermediate Multiple Exceptionalities class along with all grades from junior Kindergarten through grade 8.
The McLaughlin neighbourhood is in west central Oshawa, on Oshawa's western boundary. It is an older neighbourhood, predominantly residential, with commercial areas, including restaurants, along King Street West, the southern boundary. Housing in McLaughlin includes complexes of low-rise apartment buildings, townhome complexes, and single-detached homes from the 1950s-1960s, bungalow-style, as well as some older 2-storey homes from roughly the 1930s, and a southwest subdivision off of Thornton from roughly the 1980s.
