Monarch Park Collegiate is a 'Global School'; with this philosophy, we focus on Human Rights Education, Peace Education, International Development, Environmental Education and Multiculturism. This philosophy is supported by the fact that our students and staff represent over 70 different countries and speak almost as many languages. Our multicultural community is encouraged to pursue excellence and lifelong learning. Our program also supports this philosophy in individual subject areas and in our International Baccalaureate Program. We pride ourselves on our welcoming, safe and supportive school community. Students find their place in the world at Monarch Park.
International Development Program
Monarch Park, in conjunction with Free the Children, has created an International Development program that has seen students travel to Kenya (3 times) and India to build schools. During their travels, students deepen their understanding of world issues including human rights, environmentalism, and, by embedding themselves into the communities they visit, other cultures. This work continues at the school level as demonstrated by MPC's commitment to charities that support international aid agencies and organizations.
Partnering with the Community
We have a global vision, but we also work with our local community! We work with many local agencies (The Toronto Intergenerational Partnership, Red Door Shelter, various Community Centres, and Out of the Cold programs, for example) to support community members and to provide leadership development and Co-operative Education opportunities for our students.
The Arts at MPC
The Arts are well represented through comprehensive Dramatic Arts, Music (vocal and instrumental) and Visual/Media Arts Programs. Our dynamic Arts Department organizes Arts Nights, many Drama Presentations, participates in the Sears Festival and supports school events by providing music and tech support.
Student Life - Where You Belong
With 70 countries represented, we are a truly international school. We have many drama, music and film clubs, as well as clubs and organizations that reflect our diversity. Our sports teams are competitive and just keep getting better. There are also many opportunities for our students to give input into school events and direction; there is a very active Student Council, a creative and engaged Athletic Council who provide feedback and advice to the school's Administration on major and minor school issues. Our school embraces the philosophy of Global Education and we make every effort to infuse programming and extra-curricular activities with this focus. Our students come to us looking for opportunities to become engaged in their local, national and global communities; more and more our student community is bringing these ideas forward and teaching all of us how we can be better citizens. In fact, our students have won numerous community awards and recognition for their generosity of spirit. MPC encourages students to become engaged in their world!
What Sets Us Apart
Monarch Park Collegiate's diversity and engagement in real world issues creates a unique learning environment for our whole community of learners. Students and staff work together at our school to find new ways to extend our students' learning and experiences. Over several years, we have introduced new programming (IB), events , teams and clubs that the students and staff of the school have identified as being needed. Our Grade 9 Orientation program is focused on making the transition to secondary school as smooth as possible for our new grade 9's. By coming together for Moving on Up Day before school starts, sharing team building experiences at Camp Robin Hood at the end of the first week and going on a three day camp experience in October, our students know each other and have created a cohesive and positive learning environment.
