"A Great place to be" for almost a century In 1915, the Toronto Board of Education bought 6 acres of land on Gledhill Avenue near the dirt road that was Danforth Avenue. For two years, students were taught in two portables and then in 1917, almost 300 students started in a new Gledhill schoolhouse. By 1925, Gledhill grew to 30 classrooms. As the Danforth developed into a busy retail street, Gledhill peaked at 1200 students. With some changes to meet safety regulations, Gledhill retained its structure for almost 60 years. In 1983, the Terry Fox Recreation Centre opened. This addition, consisting of a large gym and a community room, reinforced Gledhill’s role as “a great place to be.”

Our team of parent volunteers serves a nutritious breakfast every morning to help Gledhill students get a great start to the day. The Breakfast Club also provides "emergency" lunches for students who forget theirs at home. The program is supported through parent donations and the Toronto Foundation for Student Success.
Helping the Planet!
Gledhill is proud to be an EcoSchool. Students, staff and community members work together to conserve energy, reduce waste and learn about and contribute to a healthy environment. Partnerships with the TDSB and agencies such as Evergreen have led to ongoing efforts include the Footprint Garden, the Outdoor Classroom, and the development of a Schoolyard Master Plan.

Student Life - Where You Belong
Gledhill staff and students are all working towards understanding and demonstrating the character traits outlined in the Toronto District School Board’s Character Education program. In monthly assemblies, students learn about and are recognized for showing qualities such as co-operation, responsibility, empathy and respect. Every day, students are selected to receive a “Gledhill Star” award for being noticed by a staff member while showing one of the character traits in action. Gledhill students are encouraged to be involved in school activities and develop their leadership skills. Numerous clubs, choirs, teams, and special events provide opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. Junior students act as student announcers, Reading Buddies, and recess leaders. In the Breakfast Program, students learn responsibility in helping with preparations and clean-up. Student voice is valued, and student leaders meet and provide input on school clubs and activities.
What Sets Us Apart
As Gledhill approaches a century of teaching and learning, we are proud of its history and committed to making a difference for our students today and in the future. With support from the TDSB and the Ministry of Education, Gledhill’s staff works together to plan effective programs and student assessments. Gledhill has always had strong roots in the community and benefits from Toronto Parks and Recreation programs offered at the Terry Fox Recreation Centre within the school. The Gledhill Daycare is actively involved in the life of the school and the East End Children’s Centre operates a Family Resource Centre drop-in for children and their caregivers.
Parent and Community Engagement
Gledhill’s School and Community Association (SACA) plays an active role in supporting student success by providing insight and support to the school principal, organizing fundraising events, and providing workshops for parent engagement. This committed group of parents works together to provide opportunities such as Scientists in the School, a Drama program, and special performances throughout the year. The annual FamilyFest event in the spring brings the Gledhill community together. Gledhill is also fortunate to have a wonderful group of parent and community volunteers who support student learning on field trips, in the classroom, and through their involvement in school clubs and activities such as EcoTigers, sports teams, and the Breakfast Program.
